Where Our Story Begins
Before anything else, there was Mama Sara, the quiet, steady center of our family. She fed us, raised us, and held us together through seasons of uncertainty.
When life uprooted everything familiar, she was the strength that carried us forward, giving our family courage as we started over in a place we had never known. She wasn’t just our grandmother — she was our leader, our refuge, and the heart that shapes every chapter that follows.
And when the world around her changed, she carried that strength into the unknown.

In 1978, Mama Sara fled her familiar homeland when political turmoil and violence exploded, making it no longer safe for her family. With her two sons and husband by her side, she arrived in America with no belongings to speak of, only the hope of giving them safety, a better future, and a life built on possibility.
Those early years were anything but easy: new language, new streets, long shifts, unfamiliar customs. But she faced it all with grit, faith, and determination. This was the true beginning of our family’s American dream.
They settled in Queens, New York, a melting pot of cultures and similar families arriving at the door to America, seeking a better life. What came next wasn’t simple, but every step built the life she dreamed of for us.
A New Life, Built One Kindness at a Time
Shortly after arriving, seeking an honest way to make a living, Mama Sara and her sons opened a modest gourmet shop in Forest Hills. This tiny store served the growing community of cultures that were looking for tastes of home and a sense of security. And that’s just what Mama Sara provided: It didn’t matter who walked through the door; she treated them like family.
There was once a man who would come in with nowhere to be and nothing to buy. She’d bring him tea, sit him down, and give him comfort and an ear, never expecting a purchase in return. The store was a place for the community, not just to find the foods that reminded them of home, but a place where they were invited and accepted, no questions asked. A true testament to her kind and nurturing nature.
